E-ZPass Scam Email? How to Check an Unpaid Toll

Quick Verdict: If the email says you owe money to the E-ZPass Group itself, the group says the demand is fraudulent. To check a real toll, find the agency for your account or the road you used, then open its website or app independently.

Who is asking you to pay?

The E-ZPass Group warns about emails and texts impersonating toll agencies. The group itself holds no individual driver accounts and collects no tolls. The agency that issued your transponder or operates the toll road is the place to check a bill. The official member directory can help you identify it if the name is unfamiliar.

How to check the charge

If you have a transponder, open the account you normally use through your saved app or bookmark. Compare recent trips, payments and account notices with the road, date and amount claimed in the email. If the trip is missing or the amounts differ, use the contact details inside your account to ask about it. Keep the email closed while you do this.

If you drove without a transponder, identify the road you traveled and use the operator’s official toll-by-plate or invoice instructions. If an invoice number is required and all you have is an email, contact the operator directly. Having driven on a toll road makes a payment request sound plausible, but the trip alone cannot authenticate the link.

For example, the Pennsylvania Turnpike says it begins outstanding-balance communications by mail. It directs customers to its official E-ZPass website or PA Toll Pay app. Use the guidance for the agency involved in your own trip.

If you already entered card details

Call the card issuer using the number on the card or its official app. Explain what information you entered and whether you authorized a payment. Ask how to secure the card and dispute any unauthorized transaction. Save the original message, displayed sender, amount and payment confirmation privately. If you also entered a toll-account password, change it through the real account and anywhere else you reused it.

Common questions

I used a toll road yesterday. Should I pay the email?

Check the trip with the road operator or your account first. Pay a verified bill through an official channel you opened yourself.

Which E-ZPass agency should I contact?

Start with your transponder issuer for account transactions. For a plate bill, identify the operator of the road where the toll was incurred.
