Nine9 Talent Scam or Legit? Fees, Casting Calls and Cancellation

Nine9 talent scam searches often come from people who expected an audition and encountered a paid membership offer. Nine9 is an identifiable talent-listing and marketing service. It says it is not a talent agency, and paying its fees does not guarantee a casting or job. The key question is whether the services, recurring charges and cancellation terms match what you were told.

Quick verdict: Do not treat a Nine9 signup invitation as an offer of employment or representation. Review the exact checkout before paying: official signup pages display different setup fees and billing start dates. Consumer complaints deserve attention, but they are not, by themselves, a finding that the business is fraudulent.

What is Nine9, and is it a talent agency?

Nine9 calls itself the “UnAgency.” Its company explanation describes a talent-listing service offering marketing tools, opportunities and workshops rather than agency representation. Its California notice identifies the business as Coralreef Productions, Inc., doing business as Nine9.

The Nine9 FAQ says members pay for items such as a digital comp card, casting database access and support. It expressly says monthly payment does not guarantee castings. Buying access to those tools is different from a production hiring you for a particular role.

The FTC’s modeling-scam guidance explains that modeling agencies generally earn money when talent earns money, while schools and programs may charge in advance. It warns about guaranteed jobs, pressure to pay and fees to secure a role. That is general guidance, not an FTC finding about Nine9.

How much does Nine9 cost?

The official pages inspected show these differing offers:

Official page Setup fee Recurring charge
New Talent Sign-Up: /a1/sign/ $99 $39.95 monthly, beginning two weeks after signup
New Talent Sign-Up: /a/start/ $199 $39.95 starting on signup day and recurring monthly

We could not establish why the offers differ or which an individual applicant will receive. Save the actual page shown to you, including its address, amount due today, first renewal date and refund language. Do not assume the cheaper offer applies automatically.

At $39.95 per payment, twelve recurring payments total $479.40 before any setup fee or other purchases. “Commission-free” does not mean free membership. Decide whether you would still buy the service if it produced no paid work.

What do recent Nine9 complaints say?

Two separately displayed BBB complaints illustrate the issues and the company’s responses:

  • September 20, 2026: A consumer alleged that the webinar did not disclose that the initial fee was nonrefundable. On September 28, Nine9 said a refund had already been issued. BBB marked the complaint resolved.
  • September 7, 2026: A consumer alleged misleading casting advertising, required training and unwanted payment demands. Nine9’s September 15 response disputed the training claim, saying classes were optional and included without additional fees, and said it removed the person’s contact information. BBB marked this complaint answered, which does not establish consumer satisfaction.

These are consumer allegations and company replies, not adjudicated facts. They support asking clear questions about sales presentations, services and billing. They do not establish a new October fraud outbreak or a verified total of victims.

How to cancel Nine9 and ask for a refund

  1. Send a clear cancellation request. Nine9’s membership guidance lists [email protected] and 800-989-1490 for cancellation or pause requests. State which action you want; a pause is not necessarily permanent cancellation.
  2. Keep a written record. Include your name, Talent ID if available, account email and request date. Ask for the effective cancellation date and confirmation that recurring billing has stopped. Avoid emailing a full card number.
  3. Request reimbursement separately. State the charge amount, date and reason, with supporting screenshots. Nine9’s Terms of Use say refund requests are considered individually. Canceling future renewals does not automatically establish a refund for past payments.
  4. Review any applicable cancellation notice promptly. The California Regulations section on Nine9’s signup page describes written cancellation and a full refund within a specified 10-business-day window, measured from the contract date or commencement of services, whichever is later. It permits email notice to [email protected] for internet contracts. Do not assume this California-specific notice is a universal policy; check the notice and terms supplied with your enrollment.
  5. Check later statements. If billing continues after confirmed cancellation, give your card issuer the cancellation records and ask about dispute options and deadlines. Describe accurately whether the issue is an unauthorized charge, continued billing or dissatisfaction with a purchased service.

If a sales promise was not fulfilled, the FTC’s modeling guide explains how to report it. Keep the original advertisement, payment receipt and correspondence so the complaint describes a specific transaction.

How to check an audition or casting message before paying

Ask: Is this an audition for a named production, or a presentation selling a membership? Request the production company, casting professional, role, location and application process, then verify them independently. A familiar show title in an advertisement does not prove authorization from its producer.

SAG-AFTRA’s June 11, 2026 warning describes impersonators who seek money or personal information from performers. It flags demands for job-related payments and upfront travel costs. This industry-wide alert does not identify Nine9 as the operator of those scams.

Nine9 also publishes warnings about fake checks and requests to forward money. Never treat a check followed by instructions to pay a supposed travel representative as proof of employment. For broader recruitment-message checks, see our fake job offer email guide.

Nine9 talent scam FAQs

Is Nine9 a scam or a legitimate talent agency?

Nine9 is an identifiable paid service, but it says it is not a talent agency. Evaluate its membership as a purchase of tools and access, not representation or guaranteed employment. Complaints should be considered alongside the actual offer and company responses.

Does paying Nine9 guarantee an acting or modeling job?

No. Its FAQ says castings are not guaranteed. Get any stronger promise made during a presentation in writing before paying, and verify who would actually hire and pay you.

Is a Nine9 open call the same as an audition?

Do not assume so. Clarify whether the meeting evaluates you for a specific production or explains a paid service. Attending a signup presentation does not mean you have been selected for a role.

Why do Nine9 signup pages show $99 and $199?

Both setup amounts appeared on official pages we inspected, with different first-renewal timing. We could not verify the reason. Ask for the applicable offer and save its terms before submitting payment.

Can I cancel Nine9 and get all my money back?

Cancellation and refunds are separate issues. Request both explicitly when appropriate. The published terms describe individual refund review, and some enrollment notices include specific cancellation rights. Preserve the notice that accompanied your purchase.

Should I pay a casting contact who promises to secure a role?

Do not pay to secure a promised job. Independently verify the production and representative. An optional listing subscription is a different purchase; it should not be presented as a guaranteed booking.
